Indiana Festival of Independent Film

Cinephile is pleased to present the 3rd annual Indiana Festival of Independent Film & Video, a showcase of the best locally produced movies from all over Indiana. The festival will take place on Saturday, February 16, 3:00pm at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington, Indiana.

This year CFA welcomes special guest Angelo Pizzo, writer and producer of such classic films as Hoosiers and Rudy. In addition CFA will be presenting an award for "best film." (more info...)

The festival of mostly short films features work by nearly a dozen filmmakers from all over the state of Indiana, many of whom received grants from Cinephile Film Arts to help with production costs. The audience will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite movie and the winning director will receive an “Audience Favorite” award. (See below for the list of films and filmmakers)

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is a classic 1940s era movie house with state-of-the-art sound and projection on a 30 by 20 foot screen. Past festivals have drawn large audiences not only from Indiana University and the surrounding community, but also from all over the state of Indiana.

Concessions, including beer and wine, will be available at the festival and Cinephile will have festival T-shirts, and DVDs of last year's event available for purchase. All proceeds from tickets, t-shirts, and DVD sales will go toward the 2008 CFA Film Grant Program.

This year's festival includes films in a wide variety of genres - from documentary to animation. Here's this year's line-up, beginning at 3:00pm.

NOTE: Due to previous obligations, guest speaker Angelo Pizzo has requested a floating time slot on Saturday. This means that the start time for any film could vary by as much as 15 to 20 minutes. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Kate Chaplin, Indianapolis
First They Came For…
(Drama, 5 min.)
Inspired by the poem by the Reverend Martin Niemoller, this short film is set in a not-so-distant future where a nondescript regime takes away various discriminated groups out of everday situations where they are creating no crime, all the while our narrator watches this injustice happen and struggles between standing up and saving himself.

Tells the story of a town where outsiders are imprisoned and forced to do the one job that no one else wants.

In Chicago: A Jazz Documentary
(Documentary, 14 min.)
Along with many other cities in America, Chicago faces the fear of an important music genre dying. This travelogue style film brings the viewer into the city and its jazz clubs.

There is a dark sect in the fight against evil - an elite underground organization of unorthodox secret preacher agents who get down for a higher power! And she's gonna need em all as she's about to embark on her most dangerous mission yet! The notorious Black Death, Jomar "Dez" Banks is about to unleash a virus of Biblical proportions upon the world. And it's up to the foxxiest of heroes to stop him. A street preacher encounters a man in a greasy rib joint and becomes convinced that she has been chosen by God to bring this solitary stranger to Jesus. What she doesn't realize is that he is a hired killer staking out the restaurant as he lies in wait for his intended victim. Both the hitman and the preacher lady are determined to carry out their mission - no matter what.

In this little doozie from Nineteenth State, siblings Jen and John are lazing on a Sunday afternoon when their world is flipped upside-down by hat-wearing hottie Trent. All the bloke has to do is walk by the house to ensure that Jen and John launch into a petulant, post-adolescent, good old-fashioned sibling squabble.

Filmed as a behind-the-scenes documentary of a low-budget film. An actress questions her existence after strange things start happening on the set. LesPsych questions surety and how we receive information, from the veracity of subtitles to the documentary format.

Upon her father's death, Sam returns to his secluded orchard where he lived alone. Battling the grief as she steps into this place so familiar, and yet so foreign, she sees and speaks to her deceased father. She battles her own mental clarity as the grief takes over.

With the help of various sub-aquatic creatures, nature is restored to balance. Includes original music by Phyllis Chen, performed LIVE during the screening.

Maybe Tomorrow
(Comedy, 97 min.)
A day in the life of Brandon, a 23 year old ex smoker who makes his living selling cigarettes. The day starts off with a ride to work from his girlfriend who breaks up with him as she leaves him to dwell on it for the rest of the day with reasons unknown. From here he proceeds to bitch about the unexpected event of the morning until his friends convince him to pass his daily responsibilities on to a coworker and come out to see just how bad one day can get.
