Dogs will be closely examined to see if they meet the standard set for its breed during dog shows, breed shows or conformation shows. To boost the dog breed, the kennel and breeder, kennel clubs and breed clubs conduct shows regularly. At specialty shows only specific breeds are examined.
Prior to the show, judges of the show have already set standards. To execute subjective judgements is an extremely difficult task especially to choose dogs which match the set standards laid out for the show. It is not a matter of comparing one dog to another but to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. The dog show is organized to find a dog that most closely matches the standards required.
Based on the long list of breed standards, judges get together to frame the conformation point. Conformation points can vary from one competition to another but certain general requisites still form the basis of the judging. Apart from the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality, the fur constitutes the vital focal point of scrutiny. The distribution, quality and number of the markings will be carefully scrutinized by the judges.
Healthy skin with no pigmentation is also one of the important criterions with the shape and color of the head also taken into consideration. The general attitude and temperament of each breed of dogs are also noted down. A beautiful jaw-line and perfect structure and alignment of the teeth when the jaw is closed will contribute greatly to the judges’ decision. Comparisons are made for the shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of the ears, including the ratio of the length and height. The dogs entering competitions should be well groomed because the style of walking and gait and the shape of the tail and feet are closely observed. The name of each participating dog should be registered so that every dog’s name is attached with the breeder’s kennel name.
For the purpose of identification the kennel club calls the dog by its registered name while the owner calls it by its call name. Both local shows and national shows never fail to attract contenders from different parts of the country. The hierarchical nature of the competitions allow winners to earn certain points in each show at each level, to make them eligible for the next show.
These shows at the highest level only allow pets that have already won championship in other shows to participate in order to choose the best in the breed. When the dog shows succeed in boosting the dog breed, breeder and kennel, the price of the puppies will be correspondingly high. This is because other people want to buy a pet, which resembles the champion so the popularity of the breed increases rapidly. Crufts in the United Kingdom and the Westminster Kennel Club Show in the United States are two prestigious shows available.
